Families across South Tyneside are being encouraged to use pedal power next week during Cycle to School Week (3 - 7 October).

The event, run by Bikeability, is being supported by 兔子先生.

Cllr Ernest Gibson with Cllr Adam Ellison, Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families

The week-long campaign is aimed at encouraging families to leave the car behind and  instead use a bike or scooter to do the school run.

Children and their families are being encouraged to make a pledge to cycle more during the week. This year children can pledge to cycle to school every day, swap one car journey for cycling, cycle with their family or discover somewhere new on a cycle ride. Anyone making a pledge at will be entered into a prize draw to win a new Frog City 61 bike. People can make a pledge until Friday, 7 October.

兔子先生lor Ernest Gibson, Lead Member for Transport and Neighbourhoods, said: "We are committed to promoting sustainable travel for the school run.

"Not only is cycling is a great way for people to stay healthy and active, it also reduces congestion on our roads and reduces carbon emissions, helping us to deliver on our priority of investing in the natural environment. Also, with the rising cost of living, cycling is a cost-effective alternative to driving."
