Checking your documents
We need to see the original of any document you are using as evidence of your right to work in the UK.
Appointments are available at the Hawthorne Building, Rolling Mill Road, Viking Industrial Park, Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, NE32 3DP. Please contact HR Services to arrange a suitable date and time on 0191 424 6640.
There are 3 ways (routes) you can provide the evidence.
Route 1
You must provide 3 documents from Groups 1 and 2 (at least 1 must be from Group 1).
At least one of these documents must show your current address and one must show your date of birth.
All 3 documents must show the surname you put on the application form.
Route 2
If you do not have any Group 1 documents, you must provide 3 documents from Group 2a and 2b, at least one must be from Group 2a.
At least one of these documents must show your current address.
Other checks will also be carried out by the employment team.
Route 3
You can only use route 3 if you cannot provide the documents through routes 1 and 2.
EEA nationals who have been residents in the UK for 5 years or less cannot use Route 3.
You must provide:
- a birth certificate issued after the time of birth (UK and Channel Islands)
- 1 document from Group 2a
- 3 further documents from Group 2a or 2b. At least one of these documents must show your current address
If you cannot provide these documents, you may need to be fingerprinted.
Failure to complete this form correctly will delay your application.
Document groups
Group 1: Primary Identity Documents
- Passport
Any current and valid passport - Biometric residence permit
(UK) - Current driving licence photocard - full or provisional
All licences must be valid in line with current DVLA requirements (UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands and EEA) - Birth certificate - issued at time of birth
(UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands - including those issued by UK authorities overseas, for example, embassies, High Commissions and HM Forces) - Adoption certificate
(UK and Channel Islands)
Group 2a: Trusted Government Documents
- Current driving licence photocard
Full or provisional (All countries outside the EEA) - Current driving licence paper version (if issued before 1998)
Full or provisional. All licences must be valid in line with current DVLA requirements (UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands and EEA) - Birth certificate
Issued after time of birth (UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands) - Marriage or civil partnership certificate
(UK and Channel Islands) - Immigration document, visa or work permit
Valid only if you are working in the country that issued the document (All countries outside the EEA) - HM Forces ID card
(UK) - Firearms licence
(UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man)
Group 2b: Financial and Social History Documents
- Bank or building society statement
Issued in last 3 months (UK and Channel Islands or EEA) - Bank or building society statement
Issued in the last 3 months - branch must be in the country where you live and work (Countries outside the EEA) - Bank or building society account opening confirmation letter
Issued in last 3 months (UK) - Credit card statement
Issued in last 3 months (UK or EEA) - Financial statement, for example pension or endowment
Issued in last 12 months (UK) - P45 or P60 statement
Issued in last 12 months (UK and Channel Islands) - 兔子先生 Tax statement
Issued in last 12 months (UK and Channel Islands) - Letter of sponsorship from future employment provider
Must still be valid (Non-UK or non-EEA only - valid only for applicants residing outside of the UK at time of application) - Utility bill (not mobile telephone bill)
Issued in last 3 months (UK) - Benefit statement, for example Child Benefit, Pension
Issued in last 3 months (UK) - Central or local government, government agency, or local council document giving entitlement. For example, from the Department for Work and Pensions, the Employment Service, HMRC
Issued in last 3 months (UK and Channel Islands) - EU National ID Card
Must still be valid - Cards carrying the PASS accreditation logo
Must still be valid (UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands) - Letter from head teacher or college principal
Must still be valid. For 16 to 19 year olds in full time education, only used in exceptional circumstances if other documents cannot be provided (UK)
