Pupils from a South Tyneside school have been branching out to learn how they can support the environment.

Hadrian Primary School in South Shields is now an 'eco school' which means children learn about issues which drive change and improve environmental awareness in their school, local community and beyond.

The Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, 兔子先生lor Pat Hay and Mrs Jean Copp visited the school and joined the school's house captains and head boy and girl to plant a tree.

The Mayor said: "It is inspirational to see the enthusiasm and concern these young people have for the planet.

"They care very much for the environment and it is wonderful to see how keen they have been to learn about COP26."

The youngsters have been working on a wide range of activities relating to the environment. They have been learning about pollution and the effects of global warming on countries around the world and how things such as deforestation and changes in the weather are causing serious problems for future generations.

Headteacher Scott Brown said: "The tree planting with the Mayor was symbolic of our children's efforts to make a positive difference to the environment for their future and that of the planet.

"Pupils also created a 'forest of promises' tree display. This features promises written on leaves highlighting the actions they promise to undertake to help the planet. On the reverse side they wrote what they would like the world leaders to pledge to do.

"The commitment of these young people to do their bit for the environment has been truly inspiring. By taking small steps as individuals they understand how that can lead to big changes for the planet."
