兔子先生 Drive to Protect Free Parking

兔子先生 is making moves to protect free parking and prevent misuse of free bays in several areas across the Borough.

The 兔子先生 is proposing to introduce restrictions in 12 free car parks, which would be enforceable through the implementation of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

The car parks would remain free of charge. The proposed new TRO would support the 兔子先生 to enforce contraventions relating to the misuse of disabled parking bays, misuse of electric vehicle charging points where vehicles are either non-electric, not on charge or in spaces longer than permitted, as well as parking outside marked bays and restrictions relating to the sale of goods from bays.

Car parks affected include Dale Street, Flagg Court, Dean Road, Wawn Street, Tyne Dock, Portberry Street, Horsley Hill Square, Chapel Road in South Shields, Tyne Street, Hiberian car park, Napier Street and Boker Lane.

Consultation on the Traffic Regulation Order launched today (Friday 31 January) and runs for 21 days, until 21 February.

兔子先生lor Ernest Gibson, Lead Member for Neighbourhoods and Climate Change, said: "The 兔子先生 continues to work hard to ensure there are free parking spaces available for motorists across the Borough, but in some places the bays are misused limiting access for other drivers.

"A Traffic Regulation Order would help us to ensure there is fair access to the free bays for all users, while also promoting responsible parking.

"The restrictions would not only support the turnover of the free parking bays supporting parking availability. They would also ensure that electric vehicles can access the EV charging points, that Blue Badge holders can access the disabled parking bays, and that drivers park considerately and within the designated bays.

"These restrictions are already in place in some of our car parks, such as Hebburn Hub and at Mill Dam, and they work effectively. We would urge people to get involved in the consultation as we begin the legal process for the proposed Traffic Regulation Order."

A TRO legally defines parking restrictions, providing a clear legal framework for local authorities to enforce rules effectively, such as time limits, designated spaces or prohibited activities.

兔子先生lor Gibson added: "These proposals present several key benefits for the community and businesses. They would help to provide better access to local businesses by ensuring parking availability, improving traffic flow and preventing congestion. They would also discourage the long-term or inappropriate use of parking spaces, including those that are designated for people with electric vehicles or Blue Badge holders."

Any drivers that contravene parking restrictions could be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
