Overview

There is a shortage of places in specialist education for pupils in both mainstream schools and special schools across the borough.

We aim to further support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) as well as mental and emotional wellbeing needs by adding a specialist base to West Boldon Primary School.

We aim to:

  • increase access to specialist facilities for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils with additonal needs and difficulties
  • improve access to specialist staff for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils with additonal needs and difficulties
  • increase the number of special resource places within primary schools by 13

What we are proposing

We are proposing to make the current Special Educational Needs (SEN) base at West Boldon Primary School permanent.

The base will have 13 places for children aged 5 to 11 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and will focus on social, emotional, and mental health.

It will be in the main school building and will replace one classroom for Key Stage 1 and one classroom for Key Stage 2.

We aim to make the base permanent from 6 January 2025.

Who this will affect

Places will be reserved for pupils with an EHCP who name the school as the most appropriate placement.

The Primary School's admission number will not increase, but will provide additional support for pupils who need it.

Not only will this proposal help the students at West Boldon Primary, but it will also free up potential places at specialist schools for those who need it most and encourage inclusion in mainstream schools.
