Public health news: a better u Young Health Ambassadors

Find out more about the work that South Tyneside Young Health Ambassadors (STYHAs) have been doing.

Public health news: June 2024

South Tyneside Young Health Ambassadors (STYHA) is a programme led by the South Tyneside Public Health team.

We are a group of young people from school years 9 to 13 with a passion for health. We want to make a difference by raising health awareness for young people in South Tyneside.

Our campaign for 2024 focuses on mental health in young people.

During our training, we looked at local and national evidence around mental health and did some research into what services were available for young people in South Tyneside.

We found that there are lots of services that can support us with our mental health. But young people just didn't know they were there, let alone what they did or how to contact them!

There is also still some stigma of talking about mental health topics, making it difficult for young people to access support.

We decided to create a website, giving tips and advice on mental health topics to encourage everyone to talk about how they're feeling without judgement.

We have also created our podcast, What The Health Are You Talking About!?.

We have interviewed some of the services across the borough to showcase what they do, how to access them and what young people can expect from them.

We hope it will help young people to access the right service for them, in the right way, stress free. We think that listening to real people from the services in our area will make it easier and less scary to ask for help!
