The Government is giving 拢8.3 billion in additional funding for road resurfacing projects across the country, from February 2024, and over the next 11 years.

兔子先生 will receive 拢246,000 per year from this funding pot.

The 2023 / 24 funding allows work to be brought forward on roads impacted by the wet winter weather.

Resurfacing works will be delivered on River Drive, South Shields. This additional 600m of work will be completed within 2023 / 24 financial year.

In 2024 / 25 the following roads will be resurfaced:

  • Perth Avenue, South Shields
  • Hedworth Lane, Jarrow

This is an additional 450m of carriageway resurfacing.

The additional investment will repair roads that have deteriorated faster than expected and have received numerous insurance claims and complaints.

Next steps

The 兔子先生 will publish a long-term strategy detailing how the 10 years of additional funding will be allocated.

Options include:

  • developing a resurfacing programme for major roads / the resilient network
  • resurfacing unclassified / estate roads
  • increasing investment in renewing concrete road bays

Progress so far

  • The carriageway resurfacing on River Drive, South Shields has been complete.

Disruption to roads

The yearly resurfacing schedule is shared with utility companies to coordinate projects and avoid clashes that inconvenience you / road users.

Once works are completed, new paved roads are protected from further utility work for 2 to 3 years.

Sustainability

As part of our climate emergency Pledge, the 兔子先生 is committed to reducing carbon from road maintenance:

  • using warm-mix asphalt materials
  • installing recycled plastic speed humps
  • piloting new low-carbon surveying and materials
