Public health news: South Tyneside Young People's Parliaments

Raising the profile of health and wellbeing for young people.

Public Health Newsletter: June 2023

South Tyneside Young People's Parliament (STYPP) are a group of young people aged 12 to 18 years from various schools in the borough.

They discuss and take action on issues that affect young people living in South Tyneside.

Their Member of Youth Parliament (MYP), Luke Hall, was elected in March 2022 and represents the voice of STYPP both locally and nationally.

For 2022 to 2023, Public Health supported STYPP with their chosen campaign 'health and wellbeing'.

The young people held events and consulted with students and staff from secondary schools to discover what they knew about health and wellbeing.

Young people said that they didn't know what services were available to them in relation to health, let alone how to find them.

Following this, STYPP developed a brand new , showcasing their current and previous campaigns, and featured a list of services and contact details to support young people's health locally.

The star of the campaign is an illustrated map of services in South Tyneside, co-produced with the group and designed by STYPP member Rachael Mienie. The map has also been made available for display in schools and health settings all across the borough.

STYPP welcomes new members from anywhere in South Tyneside, aged 12 to 18 years. You can find out more by contacting Laura Johnson, Participation and Engagement Officer, at laura.kate.johnson2@southtyneside.gov.uk.
